2 Asus RT-AX routers other than "AImesh network

At the moment, I have the Asus RT-AX86U set up as my primary router and the RT-AX68U set up as an AI mesh node, which is backhauled using an Ethernet cable. I was wondering whether it is possible to configure them separately and manually, with one functioning as a router and the other as an access point, without utilizing the "automatic AImesh" feature. Additionally, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each system in this scenario?
